Casco Viejo, also known as Casco Antiguo, is the beating heart of Panama City’s history and culture. Casco Viejo, founded in 1673 after the original Panama City was sacked by pirates, boasts a rich history. This UNESCO World Heritage Site served as the heart of Panama City for nearly 300 years, showcasing Spanish colonial architecture and becoming a vital center for trade and commerce. Today, it’s a vibrant hub known for its restored buildings, cultural attractions, and lively atmosphere.
Here’s a glimpse into my unforgettable exploration of Casco Viejo, filled with delicious food, stunning views, and a touch of art:

Culinary Delights:
- Kaandela Restaurant: Immerse yourself in a modern Panamanian culinary experience at Kandela. This stylish restaurant takes classic Panamanian dishes to new heights, using fresh, seasonal ingredients and creative presentations. Be sure to try the kofta, Brussel Sprouts, and “corvina ceviche” (sea bass ceviche) – a refreshing and flavorful explosion!
- Lo Que Hay: a local favorite known for its ever-changing menu based on fresh, seasonal ingredients. The intimate setting and friendly staff made me feel right at home as I savored the melt-in-your-mouth ceviche, tuna tostada, and flavorful empanadas. So good I went for nights in a row for dinner.
- Restaurant Maholo Concia Y Jardin: Escape the hustle and bustle and find a tranquil oasis at Restaurant Maholo Concia Y Jardin. This hidden gem, tucked away in a charming courtyard, offers a delightful fusion of Panamanian and international cuisine. Nice vibe for a chill brunch. Next time I’ll try the Turkish Eggs.
Rooftop Revelry:

- Selina Rooftop (pictured above): Soak up the vibrant atmosphere and panoramic views at Selina Rooftop. This lively spot is perfect for sipping on handcrafted cocktails, enjoying live music, and catching the sunset over the city. They also have a kitchen that serves tacos, ceviche, and more.
- Tantalo Hotel Rooftop: For a luxurious rooftop experience, head to Tantalo Hotel Rooftop. This sophisticated space boasts breathtaking views of the cityscape and the Pacific Ocean. Indulge in expertly crafted cocktails and small plates as you take in the stunning panorama. I went on Saturday night and it turned into a fun dance party with both locals and tourists.
- Casa Casco Rooftop: For a more intimate rooftop setting, Casa Casco Rooftop offers a relaxed atmosphere with stunning views of the Casco Viejo skyline. Grab a glass of local wine and savor the tranquility as you unwind after a day of exploration. I recommend it for sunset or pre-dinner drinks.
Cultural Encounters: I spent most of my time in Casco Viejo, but did venture out for some art and beach time.
MAC Panama Museum of Contemporary Art is a must-visit for art enthusiasts and curious minds alike showcasing Panamanian and Central American Art:
The museum’s permanent collection shines a light on the artistic landscape of Panama and Central America. From established masters to emerging talents, the diverse range of works explores themes of identity, history, social commentary, and the environment. I was particularly impressed by the vibrant paintings and thought-provoking sculptures that captured the region’s unique cultural identity.
Temporary Exhibitions Keep it Fresh:

Beyond the permanent collection, MAC Panama offers a dynamic program of temporary exhibitions. During my visit, a thought-provoking photography exhibit explored the relationship between humans and nature, sparking engaging conversations among visitors. Make sure to check the museum’s website before your visit to see what’s currently on display – you might discover something unexpected! On my visit art from Cisco Merel was the main floor exhibition and upstairs they offered 6 video essays to sit and experience.
More Than Just Art:
MAC Panama goes beyond static displays, offering educational programs, workshops, and film screenings. These enriching activities provide a deeper understanding of the art and its context, making it a great choice for families and anyone seeking an interactive experience.
Mogo Mogo Island Tour: Paradise with a Hint of Mystery

If you’re looking for a secluded island escape near Panama City, the Mogo Mogo Island tour might be for you. Here’s a breakdown of my experience, highlighting the good, the surprising, and some things to consider:
The Good:
- Secluded Paradise: Mogo Mogo Island itself is a true gem. Pristine white sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise water, and lush vegetation create a picture-perfect paradise. The limited number of tourists keeps the island feeling peaceful and untouched.
- Snorkeling Adventure (Maybe): Some tours advertise snorkeling as part of the Mogo Mogo experience. While the water is clear, the underwater life might not be as abundant as in other Panamanian snorkeling spots. If snorkeling is a priority, checking with the tour operator beforehand about visibility and marine life is recommended.
- Hiking with a View: Some tours offer short hikes through the island’s jungle trails. These provide a nice change of scenery and reward you with panoramic views of the surrounding archipelago.
- Relaxation at its Finest: If you simply want to unwind on a beautiful beach with minimal crowds, Mogo Mogo delivers. Pack a book, soak up the sun, and enjoy the serenity of this remote island.
The Surprising:
- Limited Facilities: There are no restaurants, bars, or shops on Mogo Mogo Island. Be sure to bring your own food, drinks, and any beach essentials.
- The Survivor Connection: Fans of the reality show Survivor might be surprised to learn that Mogo Mogo served as a filming location for several seasons. There’s not much remaining from the show’s sets, but it adds a bit of trivia to the experience.
Things to Consider:

- Transportation: The boat ride to Mogo Mogo can be choppy, especially depending on weather conditions. If you’re prone to seasickness, consider taking medication beforehand.
- Tour Options: Several tour operators offer Mogo Mogo Island tours with varying durations, activities, and price points. Choose one that best suits your interests and budget.
- Wildlife Encounters: Watch for hermit crabs and colorful birds while exploring the island. However, be aware that there might be some insects and even small snakes in the jungle areas.
Casco Viejo offers something for everyone, whether you’re a foodie, a history buff, a nightlife enthusiast, or simply looking for a charming escape. So lace up your walking shoes, grab your camera, and get ready to discover the magic of this captivating Panamanian gem!
