Nestled in the heart of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Bacalar is a gem waiting to be discovered. My recent trip here in May was nothing short of enchanting, filled with azure waters, gourmet dining, and vibrant cultural experiences. People flock to Bacalar, Mexico for a variety of reasons, but it all centers around this: experiencing the beauty of its Laguna de Bacalar, also known as the Lake of Seven Colors.
The lagoon’s stunning turquoise waters are unlike anything you’ve ever seen, with depths varying considerably, creating a natural palette of blues, greens, and yellows. This visual wonder is a major draw for visitors seeking a relaxing and scenic getaway.
Here’s a deeper dive into why Bacalar is a gem worth exploring:

- The Lagoon’s Magic: The crown jewel of Bacalar is undeniably the lagoon. Swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and boat tours are all popular activities, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the lagoon’s magic. Some tours even take you to explore the cenotes, Yucatan’s natural sinkholes, that are scattered around the lagoon.
- A Relaxed Escape: Unlike the hustle and bustle of Cancun or Playa del Carmen, Bacalar offers a laid-back and peaceful atmosphere. The vibe is more about unwinding and connecting with nature, making it ideal for travelers seeking a tranquil escape.
- Rich Mayan Culture: Bacalar boasts a rich Mayan history, with remnants of their presence still visible in the area. Explore the Fort of San Felipe, a 17th-century structure built by the Spanish to defend against pirates, or learn about the Mayan people’s way of life.
- Ecotourism Haven: Bacalar is a haven for ecotourism. Many eco-friendly lodges and sustainable practices are implemented here. If you’re passionate about protecting the environment, this destination aligns perfectly with your values.
- Something for Everyone: Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a nature lover, or a history buff, Bacalar has something to offer. From exploring the lagoon to diving into the local culture, you’ll find experiences that cater to your interests.
Bacalar is quickly becoming a popular tourist destination, but it still retains its unique charm. If you’re looking for an unforgettable Mexican adventure that combines stunning natural beauty, rich culture, and a relaxed atmosphere, Bacalar should definitely be on your travel bucket list.
Where I Stayed: Amainah Hotel
Set along the tranquil shores of the Bacalar Lagoon, the Amainah Hotel was a sanctuary of modern luxury. With its minimalist design and eco-friendly ethos, it offered breathtaking views and impeccable service. Waking up to the sunrise over the lagoon from my suite was a highlight of each day. The location is about an hour’s walk to town or $10 taxi rides that take a few minutes. I was able to use Uber once I was in town to get back to the hotel but there’s also a taxi stand in the town square.
